Smallish Breed Pup Training
The reason why dog lovers have got this preconceived notion that small breed pups are more challenging to educate than medium sized or larger breed canines, I will never be able to figure out. Housebreaking a puppy, in spite of its size should never be difficult.
Small dog training, is in no way different from training a dog of any other size. Although training any dog will have its peculiarities, based on its breed, invariably all other facets remain similar, and the method to training the pup should stay the same, irrespective its size.
However, I will stray from the rule here, and admit that small dog training may offer complications in two facets, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nonetheless, this is not because the size of the breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a small breed dog is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a tiny breed puppy dog cannot be crate trained or poses obstacles in being bathroom trained, it is the owner who has unknowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us examine how and why.
Aggression.
Smaller dogs are enjoyed because they are adorable, they are like dolls. Owners delight in having their doggy sit on their laps. This kind of indulgence is where the difficulty commences. The natural aggressive nature of the puppy, is to declare ownership over its world, its food, even its trainer; all pups need to be the alpha dog.
It is the hostile streak in the puppy that causes it to get on to the lap of its mistress, especially when there are a good number of humans sitting in the room.
This is a obvious act of violence. Instead of chiding the animal, every owner with the exception of no one, would hug the pooch, notwithstanding that it jumped on to their lap without being called, promoting the aggressive streak in the pup. By doing this the owner has okayed the dog's inherent need to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a a larger size dog is another outright act of violence. To the owner, and even the people who witness it, this is seen as cute, just because one dog is tiny while the other is big. Most owners praise the pup instead of chastising it, when it stands this aggression with a larger dog.
What is stated above are but illustrations as to why small breed puppies are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is problematic.
Potty Training.
Owners choose to tote their small pups around where ever they go, even when they are in the house and that makes it practically impossible to potty train them
It comes natural to the owners of small breed dogs to lug the animal to the designated place where the puppy should go to the toilet and then tote it back into the house.
It is this practice of carrying the pooch to the outdoors to poop that is the cause of all problems. In addition, ever since the pup is as a rule carried around such a lot it has no way of it telling or warning the owner that it has to make its business.
Small dog training commences with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be taken to their potty area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small breed dogs they would have no problems in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most important part of puppy training, and so it has to be, even in Small Dog Training.
