Are there folks that really get paid to play video games? Or, could it be that it's just a big fat myth which happens to serve no real purpose? Truth be known, people are indeed getting money to play new video game titles every single day. But, the word "play" generally loses a significant portion of it's meaning with this sort of opportunity.
Among the biggest misconceptions regarding testing game titles for money is that it's all fun and very little work. You can plop down on your rear-end, get comfortable, play video games, and then collect a nice big pay check when you're finished. This would truly be the perfect job; but sadly, that's not the way it works for beta game testers. Rather than taking part in a video game for fun, you are going to be testing it as part of a task.
You read correctly, professional video game testers aren't paid loads of cash to have hours & hours of fun playing amazing, new video games -- they're paid to evaluate & test brand-new game titles for developers. That is all.
By far the most common response to the above is "what's the distinction between testing & playing?" Well, its rather simple really. Any time you play a game, you would beat an area and proceed on to the next one. When you test a video-game, you beat an area after which you'll RESTART that level and play through it again. You won't do this 1 time, 2 times, or 3 times. You do this far more times than you'd think possible until you have located every one of the bugs and glitches within that area. This might lead to grinding out a particular area of a game a few dozen times, if not MORE, to ensure that you've found all of the game's possible issues. Does this seem like a "good time" to you? I'm going to go out on a ledge and say PROBABLY NOT!
Do not get the wrong impression here. Video game testers will have fun doing testing assignments -- it's just that the fun is not as much as some individuals believe it is. Rather than drinking coke, eating snacks, and hanging out with friends playing awesome video-games, professional testers are actually doing their best to make games better.
