Mental health nursing also called psychiatric nursing, is a section of nursing that relates to the care of patients that are suffering from a mental illness. Nurses who take up a career in the mental health nursing field are obliged to do an additional training course to learn about the various aspects of psychiatric care. They need to undergo studies that pertain to psychotic behavior, psychiatric medications, psychological treatments and other areas of mental health nursing.

In America, mental health nursing is actually divided into three areas. There are specific names assigned to these mental health nursing professionals, namely the licensed vocational nurse, also called the licensed practical nurse, the licensed psychiatric technician and the registered psychiatric nurse. Similar to your usual nursing grades, mental health nursing also has specific rules regarding the limits that these nurses have in regards to their duties.

The licensed practical nurses who work in the mental health nursing field, basically have the same type of responsibilities as their regular nursing counterparts, and are limited to the dispensing of medicines, assisting the registered psychiatric nurses and the doctors who are handling these patients. The same goes for the licensed psychiatric technician, who helps to gather information about the psychiatric patients that the psychiatrists manage. A registered psychiatric nurse is often given more tasks than the practical nurse because of the more in-depth study they had to go through to graduate and be qualified as a registered nurse.

When an individual wants to enter the world of mental health nursing, they are able to do so by training to become a licensed practical nurse. They can do this by training for a year or two about various aspects of nursing, such as anatomy, patient care, pharmacology and physiology. Before they do undergo practical nursing training, they have to be at least a high school graduate to be considered. After graduating from nursing college students must then pass the national board exams, before they can get a license to practice.

Mental health nursing is an area of nursing that needs a good deal of patience and understanding. The people who practice it, or want to practice it should also possess great interpersonal skills along with the ability to create bonds with their patients, to further assist them with their mental health problems. If a person does not possess any of these unique personality characteristics that must be part of a psychiatric nurse's nature, it would be pretty difficult for them to adjust to the demands that mental health nursing will produce.
