A Young Gentleman Needs Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Drug Addiction And Alcoholism
About three months ago I had breakfast with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship issues, and who is drug and alcohol dependent. As stated by Benjamin, it is his drug and alcohol dependency and his severe depression that has had the most to do with his endless relationship problems.
As explained by Benjamin, he is so overcome by his relationship problems and by both of his medical conditions that he essentially has no enthusiasm to do much of anything. What is especially sad about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished two semesters of grad school in sports history.
Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an example of a person who can address his chemical dependency and drinking problems and do something healthy about these issues. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit the very bottom before he gets addiction treatment that leads to long-term recovery.
It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his chemical dependency. For starters, there are more than a few newly created doctor-prescribed drugs that can help Benjamin through his withdrawal symptoms, through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in counseling he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to understand the fact that there is absolutely nothing helpful about substance abuse and careless drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that engaging in one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the map to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, treatment for his depression and for his relationship issues might help him cope with these psychological problems more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to involve himself in addictive behavior. And finally, in treatment he could also learn more about the different symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.
Due to the fact that Benjamin lacks the resolve to carry out much of anything in his life, it is obvious that he desperately needs some hope for a better lifestyle. And the sad thing is that hope is virtually everywhere around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his mental illness and addiction and stay with his treatment protocol.
Benjamin is simply too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't comprehend this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol therapy and get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression, he can redirect his life and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.
Enhanced relationships, positive change, self respect, and a meaningful life are certainly possibilities for Benjamin. But only if he can get motivated to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment regimen, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free manner, and learn how to cultivate a more positive attitude about his life.
