A Very Young Couple Evaluates Their Excessive And Heavy Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Goals, Dreams, And Aspirations
Frank and Linda have been dating one another for six-and-a-half years. They met while enrolled in the same Russian history class at a medium size, rural, private liberal arts college located in the Southern part of the United States. While they were only good buddies at first, they eventually began dating when they were in their first year of college.
Due to the fact both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank much beyond the experimental stage when they first began dating. As the time proceeded, then again, they began to go to more keg parties, happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, and football bashes. As a result, they slowly but surely began to drink more as time passed by.
After they graduated, they both landed jobs in a relatively small city that was located about eighty-five miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move in with each other.
With any significant transformation in a person's life there is usually something that prompts the specific transformation in question. For Frank and Linda the thought of having children and buying a new house was this "trigger." To put it simply, for the first time in their lives, Linda and Frank started to critically appraise their hazardous and irresponsible drinking and the long term negative consequences of alcohol on their health. As an illustration, they started to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their irresponsible drinking.
Would their excessive and hazardous drinking negatively affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending a large percentage of their money on drinking if they were to start saving for a new house?
From a different viewpoint, even though neither one of them ever experienced alcohol poisoning, received a "driving under the influence" arrest, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their irresponsible and abusive drinking was becoming a problem that they could not disregard anymore. All of these questions undoubtedly led to the same conclusion, namely that Frank and Linda needed to discover that they couldn't continue their irresponsible and abusive drinking if their dreams, goals, and aspirations were to be made real.
Once they came to this conclusion, they told their drinking friends about their their plans to start a family, about their marital plans, and about their goal of buying or building a new house. They also told their drinking buddies that they still wanted to hang out with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this time forward so that they could start realizing their future hopes, aspirations, and dreams.
Much to their surprise, all of their friends expressed relief because they too had been reappraising their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too often focused on drinking. They also understood that they would have to change drastically if they were to become more adult-like and show more thoughtfulness for their health, their goals, and for their careers in the next five or ten years.
After their candid discussion with their pals about their plans, dreams, and hopes, Frank and Linda basically started to have more significant relationships with all of their friends. The key reason for this was the fact that all of them had the same mindset regarding their irresponsible drinking and their short and long-term aspirations, plans, and goals.
